How WiFi QR codes work

A WiFi QR code encodes a small structured string in the format WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;;. Modern smartphones (iOS 11+, Android 10+) recognize this format natively, prompting the user to join the network with a single tap — no typing required, no app needed. This is the same format used by router manufacturers on the sticker shipped with the device.

The string lives inside the QR pattern itself; there is no redirect, no captive portal, and no server lookup. The scanner reads the SSID, security type (WPA2/WPA3/WEP or none), and password from the code and hands them to the operating system, which initiates the standard join flow. Because nothing leaves the device until the WiFi join actually begins, this is one of the most privacy-respecting QR types.

Static and private

The WiFi credentials are encoded directly inside the QR pattern. The string never leaves your device until the guest's phone uses it locally to join the network. If you'd rather not put it on a sticker that anyone can scan, use a separate guest network with a rotating password — most consumer routers support this in under five minutes of setup.

Printing recommendations

Print the SVG for cards and signage; the QR scales infinitely. Keep at least a 2 cm clear zone around the code and a high-contrast color combination. For a "table tent" card, 4–6 cm wide works well; for a wall sign at the entrance, scale up to 12–15 cm so guests can scan from across the room.

Laminate cards that live on tables — coffee rings and wet glasses destroy paper quickly. Acrylic stands with the QR printed on the back of the insert are a popular hospitality choice because they're easy to swap when the password changes. For exterior signage exposed to sunlight, request UV-resistant inks; sun-faded QRs are a common cause of failed scans after a year of summer.

Difference vs dynamic codes

A dynamic WiFi QR routes through a third-party redirect — a strange design for credentials. With FixedQRCode there is no redirect: the QR contains the WiFi string itself, so it works offline and forever, exactly as the WiFi QR standard intends. Dynamic WiFi codes also occasionally surface password-stealing scams; static codes can't be repointed by anyone after they're printed.

Security considerations

A WiFi QR is, by design, anyone-can-scan access. If your network gives clients access to internal services, do not publish a static QR for it. Instead, isolate guests on a VLAN or dedicated guest SSID with no LAN routing, and publish a QR for that network only. Most modern routers have a one-click "guest network" toggle that handles this for you.

Business use cases

Hospitality groups, museums, libraries, and event venues use static WiFi QRs because they will never break. The laminated card you print today still works five years from now, provided the network credentials don't change. For chains, the same QR layout can be reused across hundreds of locations by swapping in each site's SSID and password — a perfect job for a print template.

Where to place WiFi QRs in a venue

Placement matters as much as design. At a café, table-level cards convert better than wall posters because the scanning distance is shorter and the customer is already seated with their phone in hand. In hotels, attach the QR to the welcome card and to the inside of the room door — both locations match natural orientation moments. For conferences, put the QR on the back of every printed badge so the network is always within reach. Avoid placing WiFi QRs in bathrooms or near reflective surfaces where focus and light angles fight the camera.

Troubleshooting

  • If joining fails, double-check the security mode (WPA vs WEP) and the password case — the QR is case-sensitive.
  • For hidden networks, mark "Hidden network" so the device can find the SSID without scanning the airwaves.
  • Some older Android cameras need a dedicated QR scanner app to handle the WiFi prompt — Google Lens works on most.
  • iOS shows the join prompt as a yellow notification banner at the top of the screen; tap it before it dismisses.
  • If your password contains ; , : " or backslashes, FixedQRCode escapes them automatically; copy the password from your router rather than retyping it.
  • For WPA3-only networks, fall back to WPA2 mode on the QR if guests have older devices.
